The Harmful Myth of Normal: Embracing Your Unique Qualities and Differences

"The myth of normal limits us and reinforces harmful societal standards.

Normal is subjective

and varies from person to person.

It's time to embrace our individuality and worth."

Have you ever struggled with feeling like you don't fit in, like you're not normal?

  • Yes

  • No

  • I don't know

You may have felt like you're the only one going through certain struggles, or that something is wrong with you because you don't fit into society's idea of what is "normal."

I want you to know that this myth of normal is just that - a myth. There is no one way to be normal, because normal is subjective and varies from person to person.

What may be normal for one person may not be normal for another and that's okay...

The dictionary definitions of "normal" often perpetuate harmful and limiting beliefs.

The word is often defined as conforming to a standard or being usual, typical, or expected.

But who decides what is standard or usual?

These standards and expectations are often based on societal norms and biases, which can exclude and marginalise groups of people.

By using the word normal in this way, we reinforce harmful ideas of what is acceptable or not and we can end up limiting ourselves and others based on these narrow definitions.

Instead of trying to conform to these narrow ideas of normal, let's challenge and question them and strive for a more inclusive and accepting society.

It's important to remember that we are all unique individuals with our own experiences, thoughts, and feelings. There is no one-size-fits-all definition of normal, and trying to fit into that box can be damaging to our mental and emotional well-being.

Instead of trying to fit into this myth of normal, embrace your unique qualities and differences.

Celebrate them and let them shine.

You are not alone in your struggles, there are people out there who can understand and support you.

Seek out communities and resources that can offer support and acceptance. Remember, you are not defined by what society deems as normal, but by your own strengths, values, and character.

Let go of this myth of normal and allow yourself to embrace your true self.

You are worthy and deserving of love and respect exactly the way you are.
